Spiritually speakin', how does one learn to be a pirate?

Historically, the transition from unsuccessful sailor to at-least-meeting-the-budget has been the usual way, with lots of gray area in the matter of government sponsored free-booting, as in the 17th and early 18th centuries in the Caribbean. The English particularly seem to take to piracy without thinking that's what it is, as the history of Elizabeth I and Sir Francis Drake (whom the entire Spanish-speaking world call simply "Piratas") shows us. In the present day, piracy is flourishing (if that's the right word) in Somalia and has never exactly ceased in the East Indies. Pirates typically learn to be pirates (whether this is spiritual or not) by being captured by other pirates who, when they don't kill their captives, often make crew members of them.
