Dryer started smoking?

My guess is either (1) There is a problem with the wiring - or (2) There is lint built up either in the filter or in the exhaust vent (a lot of lint pes right through the filter). In either case you have a fire hazard. I'd suggest not using the dryer again until it gets checked out.
